Today it was announced that the Lirio by Philips Balanza consumer lighting range won one of the coveted Gold awards at the iF awards ceremony in Munich, Germany. The iF awards, covering product, material, packaging and communication design, are a recognition of international design excellence.
Only 100 of the best iF award-winning designs are honoured with the Gold award. Explaining why the Balanza stood out, the iF jury are quoted as saying: “Rather than merely appearing as a diva, this lamp makes a distinct impression as it shines with simple, clear and minimalist shapes. The design is so simple and unobtrusive that it contradicts the experimental trend and therefore scores double points.”
The Balanza range includes a floor lamp and a table lamp. The choice of materials, the shapes and proportions are contemporary, but reflect an iconic shape. The design balances the extra matt finish and the sand-blasted glass plates that create the warm, diffuse light.
“Within the whole Lirio portfolio we design around the light effect that a luminaire creates, rather than starting with the design of the luminaire itself. We focus on the experience that the light will bring to a home,” says Heleen Engelen, Senior Design Director for Consumer Luminaires, Philips Lighting. “This award recognizes the value of our approach. We are delighted to have won it.”
